ETSU remains 11 shots back heading into Tuesday’s final round

BRASELTON, Ga. (April 21, 2014) – Despite posting the second-lowest score of the day, the ETSU men’s golf team was still unable to gain any ground on the leaders following second round play at the Atlantic Sun Championship on Monday at The Legends Golf Club.

The Bucs fired a 5-over-par 293 in round two and moved into a tie for third with two-time defending champion North Florida; however, ETSU is still 11 shots off the lead heading into Tuesday’s final round at 16-over 592.

Mercer, who posted the lowest round on Monday at 3-over-par 291, jumped ahead of rival Kennesaw State for the team lead. The 33rd-ranked Bears hold a two-shot lead over No. 40 Kennesaw State as Mercer is at 5-over 581 for the tournament.

Sophomore Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) continued to pace the Bucs as he sits in seventh-place at 2-over-par 146. Meronk posted his second straight round of 73 on Monday, but is only three shots back of the individual leader. The all-conference standout played the front nine at 1-under, but bogeyed the par-5, 566-yard No. 10 and recorded a double-bogey on the par-4, 392-yard 12th before finishing with a birdie on No. 18.

Mercer’s James Beale and North Florida’s Taylor Hancock both moved up the leaderboard as they shot a 2-under 70 in the second round. Beale went from being tied for sixth into taking the outright lead at 1-under-par 143, while Hancock is one of four golfers who are one shot back. Hancock began the day tied for 12th.

Meanwhile, sophomore Chris Hickman (Centreville, Md.) and junior Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) both climbed up the board for the Bucs. Hickman and Pugh are both tied for eighth at 4-over 148. Hickman jumped up 18 spots after carding a 1-under 71, while Pugh moved up 12 spots following an even-par 72. After playing the first five holes at 3-over, Pugh finished the day on a positive note, beginning with an eagle on the par-5, 526-yard No. 9, while Hickman overcame a triple-bogey on No. 5 and played the final 13 holes at 4-under.

Freshman Mateusz Gradecki (Oborniki Śląskie, Poland) totaled a 5-over on Monday and is in 26th at 9-over 153, and sophomore Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) went from being tied for 12th into a five-way tie for 27th at 10-over 154.

The championship concludes on Tuesday as the Bucs tee off at 8:45 a.m., and will grouped with Mercer and Kennesaw State.
