Hurdler will compete against Bahamas' best in 100 meter hurdles
NASSAU, Bahamas (June 27, 2014) – ETSU junior hurdler Dede Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) has qualified for and is set to compete on Saturday in the women’s 100 meter hurdles at the 2014 Bahamas Senior National Championships inside Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium. The event final will take place at 4:20 p.m. EST.
“Dede receiving an invitation to compete in the Bahamas Senior Nationals is an accomplishment in its own right,” said ETSU assistant coach for men's and women's sprints and hurdles Hassaan Stamps. “She has worked extremely hard and sacrificed her ‘summer vacation’ to achieve something really amazing. ETSU is proud to have an individual representing our amazing institution in international competition.”
Edgecombe – who is of Bahamian descent – qualified for the Championships with her ETSU record 13.48 time in the 100mH at the University of Tennessee Challenge in early May. This time is tops among Bahamian hurdlers that compete collegiately in the United States. This invitational selects the top-five stateside competitors in the event. Domestically, her record-breaking time ranks inside the top 20 in the NCAA Division I East Region and is second best among Atlantic Sun competitors.
With a top-three finish in the event at the Championships, the sprinter can advance to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland July 23 - Aug. 3, the North America Central America and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) Under-23 Championships in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada Aug 8 – 10, and the Central American and Caribbean Championships (CAC) in early July in Veracruz, Mexico.
This achievement is just another in a long line of accomplishments in the junior’s time at ETSU. Edgecombe has re-written the ETSU record book in the women’s 100 meter hurdles by re-breaking her own record -- first established last season -- multiple times this year. The veteran now has a chance to make an impact on the international stage.
