First two signings for next season

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 7, 2013) – ETSU women’s tennis assistant coach Travis Sandlant announced Friday the signings Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) and Adreanna Christopoulou (Athens, Greece) to National Letters of Intent for the 2013-14 season.

“It is a very exciting time for our program,” said Sandlant. “We are pleased that Ioanna and Adreana are going to join us in the fall. We know the potential that they have and our coaching staff is going to work very hard to take them to the next level. To bring in professional players to the program and the experience that they have is what we are looking for. I believe they are going to make a huge impact on our team.”

After playing professionally in Greece, Markesini comes to ETSU with a current 1463 International Tennis Federation (ITF) singles ranking, down from 1335 in 2012. She also reached a ranking of 1182 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) in 2011, and in doubles, achieved a career high ranking of 1225 in 2012 as well.

Markesini carried a No. 2 junior ranking in Greece and was tabbed ninth in Open Women Greece. She is also competing in the Greek Tennis Federation Championships and Masters, and was honored by BNP Paribas with the Fair Play Award at the Junior Tennis Masters in Athens. The native Greek also recorded her highest WTA ranking win against Maria Sakkari who was ranked 638 at the time in 2012.

Fellow pro Christopoulou is coming off of a career high ranking of 1082 in doubles this year and reached a season high singles ranking of 1209 in 2011 from the ITF. In 2010, she won in both singles and doubles at the National High School Championship and was the No. 1 ranked junior in Greece. She also represented her country in the European Championship as a 17 and 18 year old. Additionally, in 2012, Christopoulou bested No. 499 in the world Dalia Zafirova.

Markesini and Christopoulou mark the first two signings for the Lady Bucs for the 2013-14 season.
