ETSU to compete in three repeat meets from last season

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 23, 2013) – ETSU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts announced Tuesday the 2013 cross country schedule, complete with four meets prior to competing in league and NCAA championships to close out the season.

“We are excited about this year’s cross country schedule,” said Watts. “Our schedule gives us the opportunity to run the conference course early on and also to compete in some quality meets prior to the championship portion of the season.”

The Buccaneers will open the season on Sept. 14 at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, followed by a trek to Blacksburg, Va. to compete in their only 6K/8K of the regular season in the Hokie Invitational a week later on Sept. 20.

After a couple weeks rest, the Bucs will be back in action on Oct. 5 in the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky., trailed by another lengthy break preceding a trip to Boone, N.C. to participate in the Blue Ridge Open on Oct. 18.

The 2013 Atlantic Sun Championship, located at Lipscomb University in Nashville, will be held on Nov. 2.

Following the conference 5K/8K will be the NCAA South Regional on Nov. 15 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. NCAA action will continue on Nov. 23 with an additional 6K/10K at the NCAA Championships at Indiana State University in Terra Haute, Ind.

A familiarity should be developed with a number of the courses after competing in three of the same meets last season. At the Blue Ridge Open last year, the men and women both experienced success including a three out of 16 finish for the men and an eight out of 14 finish for the women. These successes were followed by additional triumphs where the men placed runner up at the A-Sun Championships, while the women notched a five out of 10 standing. The men continued the momentum into the NCAA South Regional where they posted a seven out of 26 finish.

Prospects will be high entering the season as both teams return virtually their entire roster from last season including last year’s freshman phenom Katie Hirko (Oley, Pa.) who earned A-Sun Freshman of the Year honors and Filip Jalovy (Modrice, Czech Republic), who notched First-Team All-Conference accolades.
