ETSU Holds Inaugural Football Coaching Clinic

Saturday, July 27, 2013

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 27, 2013) – The East Tennessee State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics held its first annual Carl Torbush/ETSU Football Coaching Clinic presented by Appalachian Orthopedic Associates on Saturday inside the Martha Culp Auditorium on the ETSU campus.

Roughly 100 coaches from across the region were in attendance to receive a full day of coaching instruction with the sessions being held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The coaches were treated to a continental breakfast to start the day, as well as a special Fellowship of Christian Athletes luncheon, courtesy of the Chick-fil-A at the Crossings of Johnson City.

The morning session began with former North Carolina assistants Kenny Browning and Ron Case talking to the group about techniques and fundamentals of defensive line play and press man coverage. Current ETSU football consultant Phillip Fulmer wrapped up the morning session covering techniques and fundamentals of offensive line play as well as presenting a motivational speech.

Following the luncheon, former ETSU Buccaneer and current Maryville College head coach Mike Rader spoke to the group about the zone read, while University of the Cumberlands head coach John Bland talked about the shotgun option and iso option. From there, coach Torbush concluded the speaking sessions by going over take away circuits, tackling circuits and pursuit drills, and ending the clinic with a question-and-answer session.

The clinic was open to coaches at all age and skill levels from youth leagues to high school, and the proceeds benefitted the ETSU Kickoff Fund.
