Senior midfielder excels on and off the field

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (Aug. 21, 2013) – Continuing a preseason abound with accolades, ETSU senior midfielder Itode Fubara (Ogbema, Nigeria) has been named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award, one of the most prestigious awards in college athletics.

Fubara joins an impressive cast of NCAA Division I student-athletes who have excelled on the field, in the classroom, and in their communities. Sixty of the nation’s most outstanding student-athletes, 30 men and 30 women, have been selected as candidates for the award.

An acronym for “Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®,” the Senior CLASS Award honors the attributes of NCAA Division I senior student-athletes in four areas: community, classroom, character, and competition.

From the list of 30 candidates in the men’s soccer category, a national media committee will select ten finalists in October. The recipient of the award will then be determined by a nationwide fan vote, along with votes from coaches and media members, with the winner being announced in December.

While at ETSU, Fubara has been an active member of the Johnson City community, volunteering with several local schools and youth organizations, including Town Acres Elementary School, the Hispanic-American Student Community Alliance, and ‘Sports 4 All.’

The Ogbema, Nigeria native enters his senior season ranked second on ETSU’s career assists list (11) and fifth all-time for goals (7). He has twice been named to the All-Atlantic Sun First Team and has earned conference All-Academic honors each of his three seasons.
