ETSU in middle of the pack at Tar Heel Intercollegiate

Saturday, September 14, 2013

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (Sept. 14, 2013) – After the first two rounds at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, the ETSU men’s golf team sits in the middle of the pack of the 14-team field from UNC Finley Golf Course.

The Bucs registered a two-round score of 11-over-par 587 (295-292) on Saturday, while sophomores Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) and Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) paced the Bucs on day one of the fall opener. The Buccaneer duo enter Sunday’s final round in a tie for 12th at 1-over-par 145.

Kristjansson started the day strong as he was tied for sixth at 1-under 71 following the first 18 holes of competition, but after recording four birdies and three bogeys in round one, the Buccaneer golfer carded four bogeys and only two birdies in the second round for a 2-over 74. Meanwhile, Meronk shot an even-par to start the day, before closing things out with a 1-over 73. The native of Wroclaw, Poland did a solid job making par in round one as he was sitting 3-over after the first nine holes, but Meronk played the final nine at 3-under to post the 72. Unfortunately, a pair of double bogeys in round two cost Meronk a chance of moving closer into contention. After consecutive double bogeys on No. 10 and 11, the sophomore bounced back with back-to-back birdies on No. 12 and 13, but Meronk parred the final nine holes to card the 73.

Georgia Tech holds the lead on the team and individual leaderboard. The Yellow Jackets were the only team to finish under par as Georgia Tech totaled a 12-under 564, which is 15 strokes better than its nearest competitor, North Carolina State. The Wolfpack are at 3-over-par 579. ETSU sits in seventh, and are only eight shots back of NC State.

Seth Reeves, a Georgia Tech red-shirt senior, has a one-shot lead over his teammate Richy Werenski. Reeves finished the day at 6-under 138 (69-69), while Werenski went 71-68 for a 5-under 139.

The third and final round of the tournament begins at 7:40 a.m. Sunday. Live scoring will again be provided via GolfStat.
