CULLOWHEE, N.C. (Sept. 13, 2013) – In line for a 1-0 win until the 68th minute, ETSU settled for a 1-1 draw at Western Carolina Sunday. Freshman Jenny Pöltl (Steinberg-Dorfl, Austria) scored her third goal of the season in the contest.
Pöltl gave the Buccaneers (3-3-1) an early 1-0 lead in the game’s 20th minute off an assist from sophomore Hannah Short (Bristol, England).
Short, playing in just her second game since returning from an injury, drew Western Carolina goalkeeper Jenny Lauer out from the goal before passing to Pöltl for the game’s first score.
"It was an excellent pass from [Hannah] Short, and a composed, skillful finish from Jenny," ETSU head coach Adam Sayers said.
Short has recorded points in the last two games for the Bucs, scoring a goal in ETSU’s 7-0 win over Alabama A&M Friday.
Freshman goalkeeper Anna Yancey (Rosemark, Tenn.) was less than 23 minutes away from recording her third consecutive shutout before Western Carolina’s Kelly Pannell tied the game following a corner kick.
Yancey made 10 saves on 34 shot attempts by the Wildcats (4-2-1).
"Western Carolina played with a high tempo and continually delivered the ball forward early upon regaining possession, which put us under pressure in the second half," Sayers said. "We defended well throughout. Both our central defenders and the goalkeeper, Yancey, had particularly good games."
"Our two central midfield players also did well," Sayers added. "[Cecilia] Re has been excellent since she arrived."
With the draw, ETSU extended its unbeaten streak to three matches.
"It was a tough game today," Sayers said. "Both teams had chances to win it."
