ETSU shuts down nation’s top-ranked offense

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Sept. 15, 2013) – In its first ever win over a Top 10 opponent, the ETSU men’s soccer team held No. 8 UAB and its top-ranked offense scoreless Sunday afternoon as the Buccaneers captured a 1-0 victory on the Blazers’ home pitch. The Bucs have recorded four consecutive shutouts and are unbeaten (3-0-3) in their last six games against Top 25 opponents.

Deadlocked at 0-0 in the 62nd minute, senior defender Blaike Woodruff (Georgetown, Texas) played a ball behind UAB’s left back to junior Anthony Wojas (Auxerre, France). After beating a defender, Wojas sent a pass into the six-yard box as senior Luis Calzadilla (Caracas, Venezuala) streaked toward it. With Calzadilla approaching, a UAB defender slid to clear the ETSU attack, but instead steered the ball into the Blazers’ net, giving ETSU the match’s deciding goal.

Entering the contest, the Blazers (3-1-1) led the nation in scoring offense, averaging nearly four goals per game; however, ETSU’s defense, anchored by senior goalkeeper and team co-captain Ryan Coulter (Dublin, Ireland) held UAB scoreless on just eight shot attempts.

Coulter has recorded shutouts in four of his five starts this season and now ranks fourth in Atlantic Sun conference history with 19 career shutouts. The Dublin, Ireland, native and reigning Atlantic Sun Goalkeeper of the Year boasts an impressive 0.18 goals against average and .941 save percentage.

UAB junior forward Diego Navarrete, who had averaged three points per game through the team’s first three matches, finished with just a single shot attempt. Darion Copeland was the lone Blazers player to record multiple shot attempts (2).

Five ETSU players recorded two or more shots, paced by Calzadilla’s five attempts.

Following the match, Calzadilla was named to the "Kick for the Cure" All-Tournament Team along with fellow seniors Itode Fubara (Ogbema, Nigeria) and Nick Dykes (Nashville, Tenn.).

The victory marks the second time is as many years the Buccaneers (2-1-2) have defeated a ranked UAB squad. Last season, ETSU beat 17th-ranked UAB 1-0 in double overtime.
