WOLCOTT, Colo. (Sept. 24, 2013) – Having received a great deal of national attention via an article on Golfweek.com earlier in the day, the ETSU women’s golf team proved worthy of the hype Tuesday afternoon at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.

Catching the eye of the national media following Monday’s opening round, the Buccaneers refused to buckle under the pressure and again attacked the Red Sky Golf Club during second round action. Ultimately carding a team score of 304, the Bucs moved from fifth place to eventually overcome teams such as No. 35 Denver and No. 44 TCU, and will begin Wednesday’s third and final round action in third place behind only No. 29 Pepperdine and No. 25 UC Davis.

Individually, the Bucs were led by junior Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany), who carded an impressive round of 1-under-par 71 to move up to fourth place after beginning the day tied for 14th. Wahl, who stands at 147 for the tournament, currently trails Pepperdine’s Marissa Chow by six strokes for the event’s top individual spot.

“We are in the final pairing tomorrow and have given ourselves a chance for a great finish,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “This team is strong-minded and fights to the final putt. We continue to expect great things, and we were happy to see Gabi have a break through round.”

According to the current Golfweek.com national rankings, the Bucs are currently ahead of programs such as No. 35 Denver, No. 36 SMU, No. 44 TCU, No. 50 San Jose State, No. 54 Florida International and No. 58 Indiana. ETSU is currently ranked 59th in the Golfweek rankings.

Other ETSU results included a tie for 14th by senior Sian Evans (Gillingham, England), a tie for 18th by senior Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain), and a tie for 24th by sophomore Vivienne Chin (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia).
