SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU forward Simona Koren has been named the Southern Conference women’s soccer player of the week for all competition from Aug. 22-24 after leading the Bucs to a 2-0 start to the season over the weekend. The selection is made by the league office.

League newcomer ETSU downed two-time defending Big South Conference regular-season champion Radford 3-2 on Friday and followed that up with a 5-1 win over Tennessee Tech on Sunday in its return to the SoCon.

Koren, from Graz, Austria, scored three of the Bucs’ eight goals, with two of them coming against Tennessee Tech, including the eventual game-winner. Koren, who appeared in just nine contests last season due to injuries, opened her sophomore campaign with ETSU’s first goal of the season, a strike in the 25th minute that put the Bucs ahead of the Highlanders.

The weekly SoCon award was the first for ETSU, which previously competed in the league from 1997 to 2004, since Sara Prendergast took the honor on Oct. 12, 2004.

The Bucs open a four-game homestand Thursday when they host Appalachian State at Summers-Taylor Stadium at 7 p.m.

Also nominated: Lea Raedle (The Citadel), Jermaine Seoposenwe (Samford), Crystal Mackezyk (Chattanooga), Sydnie Bligh (VMI) and Maureen Buff (Wofford).
