JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Dec. 8, 2015) – The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Tuesday a sponsorship of a first grade class at Westwood Elementary School in Manchester, Tenn. for its No Excuses University program.
Westwood Elementary School is located 65 miles southeast of Nashville. Westwood is a Title One school that serves many students of low socio-economic families.
The No Excuses University program is designed to give all Westwood students the opportunity to attend college. The school has adopted an “Excuse Limit – 0” policy that drives students to excel inside the classroom. Teachers, parents, and students are playing important roles to give students an opportunity and ambition to go to college.
Bridgette Lewis, a first grade teacher at Westwood Elementary, is a graduate of ETSU. She received her bachelor’s degree in ’96 and her master’s degree in ’99. Lewis and her class chose the Bucs as their college to research and cheer for.
ETSU Director of Intercollegiate of Athletics Richard Sander and the Buccaneer athletic department decided to become a benefactor for the first grade class. ETSU sent uniform jerseys, t-shirts, and an ETSU Pride flag for the 21-student class to support their goals of attending college.
“Any time we can be involved in a child’s life, we are happy to help. Bridgette Lewis contacted us, and we were eager to pitch in,” said Sander. “It seems the children truly loved the package we sent.”
Lewis and her class wear blue and gold every Friday and are learning the ETSU chants. They are continuing to live by their moto everyday: “College is in our future…NO EXCUSES”.
