Free family event is part of Niswonger Children’s Hospital Classic

JOHNSON CITY – Local kids will have a chance to work with East Tennessee State University athletes and coaches to learn new sports and perfect their skills this Saturday as part of Family Field Day, hosted by ETSU and Mountain States Health Alliance.

The free community event, held at the Mountain States Health Alliance Athletics Center (the Minidome), will also offer fitness classes for parents.

Family Field Day is part of the Niswonger Children’s Hospital Classic, a 10-day series of events spread out across Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. The Classic is presented by the Mountain States Foundation and is the children’s hospital’s biggest fundraiser.

“We’re excited to be working with ETSU on this great event for the community,” said Mike Hammontree, director of the Niswonger Children’s Classic. “It’s important for kids to get out, be active and have fun. And what’s better than learning from the best coaches and athletes in our area?”

The event is open to adults and children ages 5-13. Kids will be divided into age groups and rotated through six different clinics that will include basketball, football, track and field, volleyball, golf and soccer. ETSU players and coaches from all sports will be there to teach the children.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for kids in the community to get a one-on-one experience with a Division I athlete to see what it takes to be healthy and active,” said Tyler McCann, coordinator of ticket sales and fan experience at ETSU. “The kids will able to see where these athletes train and learn how they fine-tune their techniques.”

Parents will also get to attend free fitness group classes at Family Field Day taught by The Wellness Center instructors. Water and healthy snacks will be provided by Ingles.

The event starts at 9 a.m. and lasts until noon. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at tents set up outside the Minidome on the parking garage side. Participants are encouraged to park in the parking garage. For more information, contact Hammontree at HammontreeDM@msha.com or 423-302-6105
