CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (May 9, 2003) - Chattanooga's Melissa Ramirez hit her second multi-run home run of the day in fourth inning en route to a 8-0 Chattanooga win over East Tennessee State in game eleven of the 2003 Southern Conference Softball Championships being held at Frost Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn. The loss ends an eight-game winning streak for the Buccaneers.
The Lady Mocs (36-27) took a 1-0 lead in the second when Lindsey Howard doubled in Leslie Barron. Melissa Ramirez and Jada Pescatore plated one runner each with singles in the third to make the score 3-0. Chattanooga broke open the game with a four-run fourth inning. Bryn Favor singled in Grace Pickett, and Ramirez, who extended her hitting streak to 12 games, clubbed a three-run homer to push the margin to 7-0. Pickett's bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the fifth provided the final 8-0 score.
UTC's Awbrey Winckler threw her fourth-straight complete-game shutout in the 8-0 victory. She raised her record to 21-14 while striking out three and has 34 2/3 consecutive shutout innings. Ramirez hit her second home run of the day in the third inning of the second game and her team-high 12th of the season. She overtook the SoCon home run lead from teammate Jennifer Reed.
ETSU starter Jennifer Fraser (Chattanooga, Tenn.) (9-13) took the loss allowing six runs on eight hits with two walks and one strikeout. Tiffany McVay (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.) threw one-third of an inning and Jolene Holthaus (Sidney, Ohio) pitched two-thirds.
With the win, Chattanooga advances to the championship game at Frost Stadium at 12:15 on Saturday, May 10. UTC, undefeated in the tournament, must get beaten twice to be eliminated. With the loss, East Tennessee State moves to the loser's bracket to face the winner of the College of Charleston/ Georgia Southern game. Regardless, the Buccaneers' next game will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday. A win by ETSU would place the Bucs in the championship game versus the Mocs.
