Tuesday, March 16, 2004SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Mar. 16, 2004) - East Tennessee State sophomore Belinda Barrera (Fayetteville, N.C.) has been named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week for Mar. 16. Barrera went 4-1 in the pitcher's circle with a 0.81 ERA last week. She struck out 36 batters in 26.0 innings pitched. She set a school record with 15 strikeouts in a 6-3 win over Towson on Mar. 13. Earlier in the week, Barrera hurled a one-hit shutout over Monmouth while fanning nine batters. Barrera's attempt at ETSU's first-ever no-hitter was foiled when Monmouth's leadoff batter beat out a dribbler to Buccaneer third baseman Lindsay Lane in the top of the sixth inning. Barrera also earned a victory over Central Florida last week, pitching 4.1 innings of relief in ETSU's 9-5 come-from-behind win. She picked up another victory in relief in the Bucs' thrilling 10-9 triumph against Hartford. East Tennessee State is currently 14-12 overall, while Barrera is 6-3 with a team-leading 1.28 ERA in 13 appearances. The Buccaneers are getting set to head to Blacksburg, Va. for this weekend's Hokie Classic hosted by Virginia Tech.
