TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 17, 2007) - After playing battling No. 15 Washington in a nine-inning affair during the first game of the Wilson Invitational on Saturday, the ETSU softball team had nothing left in the tank in the nightcap as Hofstra's Kayleigh Lotti pitched a no-hitter against the Bucs. Hofstra won the game, 8-0, in five innings, while ETSU committed a school record seven errors in the contest.
ETSU falls to 2-2 after four games this season, while Hofstra moved to 1-1. Freshman Darci Gilbert (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) was faced with some bad luck tonight as she allowed only one earned run in 4.2 IP and suffered her first collegiate loss (1-1), while Lotti made her first start of the 2007 a memorable one.
Both teams went down in order in the first, but the Pride would get all the offense they needed in the top of the second. After Gilbert got the leadoff hitter to ground out to short, she surrendered four consecutive hits to the Pride batters, which allowed three runs to cross the plate.
The Bucs only base runner came in the third when Briana Knight (Brier, Wash.) reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. However, ETSU could not move her along as Lotti recorded two of her 10 strikeouts by getting Powell and Gaynord out swinging. Hofstra would push two more runs across in the fourth and add three more in the fifth as the Bucs committed four of their seven errors in the two frames.
Gilbert allowed eight runs (one earned) on six hits and struck out two, while Lotti sent 10 of the 16 ETSU hitters down on strikes as she went the distance. Amanda Haverman (Kirkwood, Mo.) came in and pitched one-third of an inning, allowing one hit.
The Wilson Invitational continues tomorrow when ETSU returns to action against Wichita State at 11:30 a.m. For the second straight day ETSU will play another ranked team as they face host South Florida in the second game at 4:00 p.m. USF is currently ranked 24th in the nation.
