Lady Bucs to face Lipscomb in first round of A-Sun Championships on Thursday
DeLAND, Fla. (May 6, 2009) - With the 2009 Atlantic Sun Softball Championships ready to kick off on Thursday morning in DeLand, Fla., the league office announced its postseason conference winners, and ETSU third baseman Amy Campbell (Hixson, Tenn.) learned she received All-Freshmen Team honors on Wednesday afternoon.
Campbell played in 49 of the 53 regular season games for the Lady Bucs, while starting 44 at third and three behind the plate. The Hixson, Tenn. native ranked second on the team in doubles (5), fourth in RBIs (13), fifth in hits (38), and sixth in hitting (.286). Campbell, who posted 13 multi-hit games, also recorded a team-best 10 sacrifice hits. The stellar third baseman notched a season-high six-game hitting streak to begin the season, while driving in a career-high three runs and belting her first collegiate home run in the 9-0 win over UNC Central on April 4 inside the ETSU Softball Complex.
The top-seeded Campbell Camels picked two top awards on Wednesday, as Drew Peterson was tabbed Coach of the Year and Brittany Stanley was named Pitcher of the Year. Florida Gulf Coast's Cheyenne Jenks was named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year and Lipscomb's Whitney Kiihnl was selected Freshman of the Year.
The Lady Bucs will most likely get an up-close look at Kiinhl on Thursday morning, as No. 5-seed ETSU takes on No. 2-seed Lipscomb in the first round of the A-Sun Championships. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. at Stetson's Patricia Wilson Field.
Since joining the A-Sun in 2006, the Lady Bucs have won six of the nine meetings against the Lady Bisons - including a win in the 2007 Atlantic Sun Tournament. Lipscomb swept ETSU in Johnson City back in April.
The winner of ETSU/Lipscomb will face the winner of Mercer/Jacksonville at 6 p.m., while the loser of the 11 a.m. game will take on the loser of Campbell/Stetson at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
