Lady Bucs drop two in Buies Creek
Thursday, April 22, 2010

BUIES CREEK, N.C. (April 22, 2010) - Needing a sweep at Campbell to keep its Atlantic Sun Tournament hopes alive, the ETSU softball team dropped a pair of games to the Lady Camels on Thursday evening at Eakes Athletic Complex.

Campbell scored three runs in the second and two more in the fifth to take game one 5-1. The Lady Camels capped off the sweep with an 8-0 five-inning victory in the nightcap.

With the pair of losses, the Lady Bucs can no longer move into one the top six spots for the conference tournament after falling to 16-32, 5-13 on the year. Meanwhile Campbell, the two-time defending tournament champions, improved to 20-26-1, 7-7.

Campbell scored three runs in the second and two more in the fifth to take game one 5-1 over the Lady Bucs.

Three Lady Buccaneer players recorded hits as senior outfielder Katy Jett (Talbott, Tenn.) finished a perfect 2-for-2. Meanwhile, fellow senior Cheniece Cason (Moreno Valley, Calif.) also reached base twice for ETSU (one hit, one hit-by-pitch) and scored the lone Lady Buccaneer run.

The Lady Bucs used some small-ball tactics to generate the first run of the game and jump out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Cason led off with a single through the right side, and advanced to second on Jett's sacrifice bunt. Following Lucy Schneider's (Dade City, Fla.) ground out to second, Cason crossed the plate on a passed ball by Taylor McGee.

ETSU's lead didn't last long as Campbell plated three runs on three hits in the bottom half of the second to take a 3-1 advantage. The Lady Camels loaded the bases to begin the inning thanks to a pair of one-out singles and a walk by Robin Leathers. Then, with no room for error, senior righty Darci Gilbert (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) walked in the first run - and Campbell took the lead on Keeli Michael's sac-fly RBI to center. The Lady Camels scored their final run on Sarah Forgacs' RBI single up the middle - making it a two-run advantage.

Campbell picked up a run scoring single and an RBI double in the fifth to extend its lead to 5-1.

After not having a base runner reach second base since the first inning, ETSU had two runners on board in the sixth. However, with Jett on first and Cason on second, Schneider hit into an inning-ending grounder to third to halt any comeback charge.

The Lady Bucs had runners on with only one out in the seventh, but Lauren Stephan struck out the final two ETSU hitters to earn the win. Stephan improved to 2-3 on the year after allowing one unearned run on four hits. Gilbert was tagged with the loss (4-8) for ETSU after issuing five runs (three earned) on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work.

Brittany Stanley tossed a one-hit shutout and the Lady Camel hurler was rewarded with a six-run fourth, as Campbell swept the Lady Bucs with an 8-0 five-inning victory.

Stanley tossed her fourth shutout of the season and improved to 9-9 with the win. Senior right-hander Marissa Hardy (Rocklin, Calif.) suffered the loss (4-11) for the Lady Bucs after being charged with eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits in 3.1 innings.

After leaving a pair of runners stranded in the bottom of the first, Campbell capitalized on a leadoff walk by Lauren Stephan as she came around to score on Keeli Michael's RBI single through the right side - giving the Lady Camels a 1-0 advantage. However, with Lady Camel runners standing on second and third, senior Marissa Hardy  (Rocklin, Calif.) retired the next two hitters she faced to limit the damage.

Campbell scored a run in third on Amanda Miller's solo home run to left and the Lady Camels made it 8-0 by plating six runs in the fourth.

The Lady Bucs were held to one hit in five innings of work as Katy Jett broke up the no-hit bid with a bunt single in the fourth.

ETSU returns to action on Friday afternoon when the Lady Bucs wrap up the brief four-game road trip with North Carolina Central. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for noon.
