CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Feb. 25, 2010) - After winning four of its six games last week, including a sweep over Furman, the ETSU softball team looks to improve on its record when the Lady Bucs travel to Chattanooga and play in the Frost Classic this weekend.
ETSU (4-3) picked up wins over Furman, Temple and Eastern Illinois last week and were led by the hot bat of freshman Arielle Garner (Buchanan, Ga.) and the strong arm of Jessica Duncan (Ooltewah, Tenn.).
Garner led all ETSU hitters with a .471 batting average - going 8-of-17 with two doubles, a home run, four runs scored and three RBI. The Buchanan, Ga. native, who posted a .765 slugging percentage along with a .571 on-base percentage, hit safely in five of the six games played.
Meanwhile, Duncan went 2-1 with a 1.11 ERA (3ER/19.0IP) and struck out 17 hitters. The Ooltewah, Tenn. native limited the opposition to a .175 batting average and tossed one complete game in three appearances (two starts). The right-hander began the week with a win over Furman - tossing six innings of two-run ball - while fanning five Paladin hitters. Then, on Saturday afternoon, Duncan tossed eight innings in the 2-1 victory over Eastern Illinois. Duncan allowed the lone run on three hits and fanned a career-high nine batters.
The Lady Bucs open up play with Central Connecticut State (10 a.m.) and Ball State (12:30 p.m.) on Friday; while facing UT-Martin (10 a.m.) and Rutgers (3 p.m.) on Saturday. ETSU closes out the tournament with another Tennessee rival in Tennessee Tech on Sunday. First pitch on Sunday is set for 12:30 p.m.
