JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 27, 2013) – Heading into Saturday, the ETSU softball team hoped it could build on a midweek win over USC Upstate to close out the season strong and honor its four graduating seniors.
The victories were not in the cards, but the senior class of Mikayla Treadway (Unicoi, Tenn.), Tara Hartnett (Snellville, Ga.), Whitley Hensley (Erwin, Tenn.) and Sam Lower (Sebring, Fla.) was recognized prior to the start of the first game. The accomplishments of all four both on and off the field were acknowledged in a pregame ceremony as the graduating class was escorted to the field by their friends and family.
“We wish the seniors well as they move on to the next stages of their lives,” ETSU head coach Brad Irwin said. “They will always be a part of the Buccaneer softball family.”
As for the two ball games, ETSU (13-34, 1-24 A-Sun) got just a leadoff hit in game one from Nicole Fox (Peachtree City, Ga.) en route to a 1-0 defeat. The Bucs were able to scrape across a run in game two, but not before Kennesaw State (24-18, 16-10 A-Sun) put up eight to take a sweep of the day, 8-1.
Junior Katie Wolff (LaGrange, Texas) continued her consistent season and set down the first 14 batters to come to the plate in the opener. Wolff’s go for a perfect game came to a screeching halt with two outs in the fifth as Angie Dascoli got a hold of a 1-0 pitch and drove it over the wall in left-center field.
The blast was the difference in the ball game as Wolff (6-19) took the loss after only allowing the run on three hits and a walk. KSU starter Amanda Henderson (18-4) got the win, tossing a one-hitter after giving up just the slap-hit to Fox to start her day. Henderson struck out seven and retired 16 consecutive batters following Fox’s single.
The Owls jumped all over ETSU game-two starter Whitney Leon (Dandridge, Tenn.) for five runs in the first inning, seemingly putting the game away before the Bucs were able to get to the plate. Caitlin Fowler had the big hit, doubling to right-center with the bases loaded to plate the first three runs.
The first three Owls to step to the plate in the second inning all singled, extending the lead to 6-0. Leon (1-5) did a good job to get out without any further damage, getting Dascoli to foul out, Fowler to strike out and Kara Chambers to ground out after KSU had loaded the bases with nobody out.
Fowler would have her redemption, clubbing a two-run homer to right field in the fourth to bring KSU’s lead to 8-0. She finished the game 2-for-4 at the dish with two runs and five RBIs.
The Buccaneers broke through in the fifth, staying alive for the time being. ETSU needed to score to escape the run rule and did when Treadway grounded out to second, bringing home Casey Horner (Whitesburg, Tenn.) for the Bucs’ only run of the ball game.
Abbey Mixon (14-9) took the win in the nightcap, allowing just three hits and an unearned run while striking out four.
The ETSU softball team hopes to play its regular season finale against the Owls on Sunday, pending some inclement weather expected to affect the Tri-Cities. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
