Johnson City, Tenn. (Mar. 31, 2002) -- The East Tennessee State softball team fell to College of Charleston, 8-5, in Southern Conference softball action Sunday afternoon from blustery Kiwanis Park in Johnson City. ETSU (14-17, 4-5 Southern Conference) opened up the scoring with a three run second inning. Sophomore catcher Sheryl Clark (Bradenton, Fla.) doubled to right center and came home on a single by freshman third baseman Lindsay Lane (Erwin, Tenn.) with one out. Later in the inning, sophomore left fielder Tiffany Vandergriff (Sale Creek, Tenn.) drove in freshman outfielder Amy Moore (Jacksonville, Fla.) and senior second baseman April Arnold (Mountain City, Tenn.) by lacing a triple to right field. The Bucs increased their lead to 5-0 after scoring single runs in both the third and fourth innings. In the fourth, freshman shortstop Mary Beth Hazelwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) walked to open the inning, then advanced to third after a sacrifice by Clark and a ground out by sophomore right fielder Rhea Holler (Peoria, Ariz.). She would come home on a wild pitch. Moore walked to lead off the Buccaneer half of the fourth inning. She advanced to second on a wild pitch, then came home on a one-out single to center field by freshman center fielder Danielle Spetar (Knoxville, Tenn.). The Bucs, with a 5-0 lead, looked in control of the game. College of Charleston's (14-19, 4-5 SoCon) bats came alive in the fifth inning, as they scored eight runs to snatch the lead from the Bucs. The Cougars collected six hits in the inning, but their two biggest hits came with two outs. With designated player Chastity Sites and Lauren Rabun on base, catcher Katie Scott hit a double down the left field line to score both of the runners and give College of Charleston the lead, 6-5. Three batters later, with Scott and second baseman Brooke Flowers on base, shortstop Beth Long hit a single to third base, plating both runners and extending the Cougar lead to 8-5. After the fifth inning, there was only one more hit in the game, as ETSU reliever Marsha Giles (Jonesborough, Tenn.) cooled off the Cougars and College of Charleston reliever Carla Shepherd shut down the Bucs. Giles (5-7) picked up the loss, allowing three earned runs and four hits in 2.2 innings of work. Buccaneer starter Courtney Jenkins (Knoxville, Tenn.) allowed five earned runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings on the mound. Marissa Echenique (8-8) earned the win for College of Charleston, pitching two innings of relief, allowing two earned runs on one hit. Carla Shepherd pitched the final three innings for her second save of the season. Vandergriff drove in two runs and Moore scored two on the afternoon for the Bucs. East Tennessee State returns to action on Apr. 4 for a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Tennessee Tech from Metro-Kiwanis Park in Johnson City. College of Charleston will now travel to Winthrop for a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Apr. 3 from Rock Hill, S.C.
