Softball Splits First Two Games in Western Kentucky Spring Fling

Friday, March 08, 2002

Johnson City, Tenn. (Mar. 8, 2002) -- The East Tennessee State softball team defeated Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, 3-2, and fell to Bradley, 8-0, Friday in the first two games of the Western Kentucky/Ramada Inn Spring Fling from Bowling Green, Ky. In game one, IUPUI (0-1), took a 2-0 lead by scoring individual runs in each of the first two innings. No more runs would cross the plate until the Bucs (6-8) would tie the game at two in the bottom of the fourth. The big blow of the inning came as freshman third baseman Lindsay Lane (Erwin, Tenn.) hit a two-run homer after a walk by sophomore Julia Chance (Knoxville, Tenn.). The game remained tied through seven innings, so the game had to go to extra innings to decide a winner. The Jaguars went scoreless in the top of the eighth, but the Bucs would plate a run in the bottom of the frame to take the game, 3-2. Freshman catcher Sheryl Clark (Bradenton, Fla.) was the first batter of the inning, and wasted no time lacing a double to left field to score freshman Amy Moore (Jacksonville, Fla.), who was placed on second to begin the inning. Freshman pitcher Courtney Jenkins (Knoxville, Tenn.) went the distance to earn the win for the Bucs. She allowed no earned runs and six hits while striking out five in eight innings. Jenkins is now 2-2 for ETSU on the season. Lane was the star at the plate for the Bucs, going 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Game two did not go as well for the Bucs, as Bradley (3-5) scored six unanswered runs in the first three innings and never looked back, defeating ETSU, 8-0. Sophomore pitcher Tiffany Vandergriff (Sale Creek, Tenn.) pitched a complete game, allowing four earned runs and 10 hits while striking out three. Vandergriff runs her record to 2-3 on the season for ETSU. The Bucs could muster just two hits off of Bradley starter Sandra Britt, singles by senior shortstop Melanie Collins (Greeneville, Tenn.) and sophomore first baseman Miranda Byerly (Candler, N.C.). East Tennessee State also played Morehead State in the first day of competition from the Western Kentucky/Ramada Inn Spring Fling, but results are not expected until late Friday night. ETSU's first game on Saturday is against host Western Kentucky at noon.
