STATESBORO, Ga. (May 1, 2004) - Georgia Southern's Kim Griffin launched a three-run home run to give the Eagles the 3-1 victory over East Tennessee State in game one of the SoCon doubleheader. The second game of the day was called after the fourth inning due to thunderstorms in the area. Game two, which was in a scoreless tie after four innings, will be completed prior to Sunday's scheduled game. East Tennessee State (25-30, 5-11 Southern Conference) opened the top of the second with Lindsay Lane (Erwin, Tenn.) reaching first on an Eagle error. She would advance to second on a Tiffany McVay (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.) sacrifice bunt. Sheryl Clark's single to the shortstop allowed Lane to score the first run of the game, giving ETSU the early 1-0 lead. Georgia Southern (26-25, 8-8 Southern Conference) took the lead in the bottom of the third inning as Carolynn Chin singled to left field. Shanita Black reached first on a fielder's choice, putting Chin out at second. Aurora Johnson then singled to right center, putting runners at first and second as Griffin stepped to the plate. She launched a three-run bomb to left center to give the Eagles the 3-1 lead and eventual win. In game one, GSU's Cary Moone scattered four hits, while striking out seven and not allowing an earned run. For ETSU, Courtney Jenkins (Knoxville, Tenn) and McVay combined for four strikeouts, giving up seven hits. The Eagles and Bucs will return to action Sunday afternoon at 1:00 for the final home game of the season. GSU will honor senior Kim Griffin prior to the game.
