JOHNSON CITY, TENN. (April 25, 2004) - Lady Bucs pitcher Belinda Barrera (Fayetteville, N.C.) pitched a one-run, complete game to give ETSU (25-29, 5-10 SoCon) the 3-1 win versus College of Charleston (35-21, 9-6 SoCon) today at Metro-Kiwanis Park. With the win, ETSU captured two victories in the three game series with Charleston and posted their fifth conference win of the season. Both pitchers started hot as Barrera and Cougar pitcher Natalie Smith each pitched four scoreless innings to start the afternoon match-up. ETSU struck first when in the fifth inning the single off the bat of Rhea Holler (Peoria, Az.) ignited the Lady Bucs offense. After an errant throw by Cougar catcher Amy Moore, Holler found herself in scoring position after reaching second on the error. Holler scored the first ETSU run of the inning off the single of Mary Beth Hazelwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) to give the Lady Bucs the 1-0 lead. After a Janine Sprague (Hillsborough, N.C.) double, Hazelwood scored from first allowing Dani Spetar (Knoxville, Tenn.) to step to the plate with a runner in scoring position. Spetar belted a one-run triple with two outs in the inning scoring Sprague and giving ETSU the 3-0 upperhand. Barrera managed to hold the Cougars scoreless until the top of the sixth when Charleston posted one run off a Katie Ballard single to cut the ETSU lead to 3-1. Smith faced just three batters in the bottom of the sixth when ETSU went down in order sending the Cougars back to the plate in the top of the seventh down two. After Charleston loaded the bases, Barrera forced Darcy Johnson to fly out to center field giving ETSU the 3-1 win for the day. Sprague led the Lady Bucs with two hits, while Ballard and Bridget Loudermilk each posted two hits for the Cougars. Barrera won her ninth game of the season with her 13th complete game. Catch the Lady Bucs back in action when they travel to Georgia Southern for a three-game series May 1-2, while the Cougars will host UNC Greensboro May 1-2 in Southern Conference action.
