ROCK HILL, S.C. (March 24, 2004) - The Winthrop softball team split a double-header with East Tennessee State, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Terry Field. Winthrop pulled off a 4-1 victory in nine innings in game one and ETSU powered its way to a 7-1 win in the nightcap. The Lady Eagles are now 19-14-1 overall and the Lady Buccaneers are 18-15. Game one was a pitcher's duel with ETSU's Belinda Barrera (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Winthrop's Kelli Johnson going head-to-head. Barrera and Johnson both took shutouts into the ninth with ETSU striking first in the top half of the inning for a 1-0 lead after a Rhea Holler (Peoria, Ariz.) single drove in Stephanie Gaynord (Manassas, Va.), who was placed on second. Berrera not only took a shutout into the bottom of the ninth, but she also had a no-hitter. Winthrop's Sarah Conrad was placed on second and after a fielder's choice put Caryn Little at first and Conrad on second, ETSU walked Janiva Willis to load the bases with no outs. Katie Kipisz grounded to the pitcher who got the first out on a force out at home. However, Berrera lost the no-hitter and the game when Kjersti Johnson hit a walk-off grand slam to win the game. Barrera finished the game with eight strikeouts and two walks. Kelli Johnson improved to 10-4 on the year allowing only one run on seven hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts. In the second game the hits came for the Lady Eagles, but they were unable to get runs across the plate. The lone run came in the second inning as Winthrop took the lead on an RBI double by Laura Hill. Then ETSU took a 2-1 lead into the fifth and mounted four runs en route to a 7-1 victory. Tiffany McVay (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.) had an RBI double in the fifth and Lindsay Lane (Erwin, Tenn.) added a solo shot. The Lady Bucs will return to Southern Conference play on Saturday and Sunday with a three-game set at Appalachian State.
