BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (Feb. 16, 2005) - The Lady Bucs softball squad traveled to face Gardner Webb for an early season non-conference match-up today falling 3-1 in the first game and taking the 6-0 sweep for the victory in game two of the day. Courtney Jenkins (Knoxville, Tenn.) pitched a stellar game in the win for the Bucs, while Brittney Lehrschall (Leland, N.C.) was credited with the save.
Lindsay Lane (Irwin, Tenn.) had a solid day at the plate for the Bucs. Her homerun during the first set of the doubleheader was the only ETSU run in the contest, while her offensive contribution in the second game helped propel the Lady Bucs to their fourth win of the 2005 season.
East Tennessee State struck quick in the second game as Briana Knight (Brier, Wa.) beat
out an infield single with one out in the top of the first. Knight would
come around to score after two GWU errors and a single by Lane.
The Buccaneers kept the offense coming in the second frame as Stephanie
Gaynord (Manassas, Va.) led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a Stephanie
Cope (Maryville, Tenn.) sacrifice and scored on an Allison Burnette (Ten Mile, Tenn.) RBI single. Gardner-Webb then committed two more errors, allowing ETSU to push across two more runs.
ETSU would add a sixth and final margin in the third inning on an RBI double
off the bat of Jessica Longsinger (Dale City, Va.), and Jenkins kept the GWU bats
silent throughout her six innings of work, allowing just four hits and
striking out three for the win.
ETSU continues action versus Miami and Charlotte in the Charlotte Holiday Inn First Pitch Classic on Feb. 25. Game times are set for 10:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. respectively. Visit ETSUBucs.com for game scores and recaps.
