Campbell sweeps ETSU softball, 2-5 and 5-7

, Tenn. (April 10, 2006) - Campbell used a pair of late-inning rallies to deal the ETSU softball team an Atlantic Sun doubleheader sweep, 5-2, and 7-2, Monday afternoon at Metro-Kiwanis Park.  With the victories, Campbell ups its record to 25-21, 7-3 in conference play, while ETSU falls to 13-28 overall and 2-6 in the A-Sun after sufferings its sixth-straight setback.


The Camels broke open 1-1 tie in game one, mounting a four-run sixth inning, including a three-run double off the bat of Holly Harris.  


The Lady Bucs would manage one more run in the game, thanks to a solo homerun from Mary Catherine Vercoe (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) in the sixth inning.  The blast was the freshman's fifth of the season.


Campbell took the early lead in game one, as Jessica Huffman came around to score on a Karlie Love single in the first.  ETSU got its first score in the fifth when Stephanie Gaynord (Manassas, Va.) singled in Stephanie Cope (Maryville, Tenn.).  Gaynord led ETSU with two hits in the opening game.


Vercoe took the loss on the mound, dropping to 5-11 on the season.  The rookie hurler threw all seven innings, giving up five hits and five runs, while striking out four and walking three.


Campbell's Lauren Caviness got the win, improving to 13-12.  Caviness allowed seven hits and one earned run in seven innings, while fanning seven. 


Errors plagued both teams in game one, with ETSU committing five miscues and Campbell made three.


Game two saw Campbell ride a 2-1 advantage early, before peppering the Lady Bucs with a four-run, three-hit sixth.  Stephenie Pappas was the first to score in the inning, coming home on a double from Bailey Garner.  Huffman kept the rally alive, sending a single down the left field line to plate Corri Long.    


The Camels got their final two runs of the inning on a two-run double from Krysten Vlacancich.  Vlacanich posted an outstanding 3-for-4 performance in game two, including three RBIs.    


Tori Gast (Germantown, Tenn.) scored ETSU's first run of the game, taking advantage of a Campbell throwing error in the third.  The Lady Bucs' second run came in the sixth when a Jessie Hackworth (Clinton, Tenn.) groundout scored Gaynord.


Courtney Jenkins (Knoxville, Tenn.) was tagged with the loss for ETSU, falling to 4-11.  The senior went 5.0 innings, giving up eight hits and five runs.  Brittany Lehrschall (Leland, N.C.) closed out the final two innings, allowing four hits and two runs.


Kelly Weaver was credited with the win, moving to 12-6 on the season.  Weaver allowed four hits on the afternoon, while striking out five.


The Lady Bucs continue A-Sun play on Thursday, hosting Florida Atlantic in a conference doubleheader.  Game one is set to begin at 2 p.m., at Metro-Kiwanis Park.
