Martin, Hardy sweep Atlantic Sun weekly honors

Monday, May 04, 2009

MACON, Ga. (May 4, 2009) - Freshman Annie Martin (Centerville, Tenn.) and junior Marissa Hardy (Rocklin, Calif.) gave the ETSU softball team a boost in the final week of the regular season, and on Monday afternoon the league office rewarded both Lady Buccaneer standout players with Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honors.

Martin exploded for an outstanding week by hitting .643 (9-14) with a home run, four runs scored and five RBIs in games against Western Carolina and Radford. The freshman outfielder - who hit safely in all four games this week and raised her average 61 points to .298 - also posted a slugging percentage of .857 and an on-base percentage of .643. Martin began the week with a 7-for-8 effort at Western Carolina on Wednesday night, and her big bat helped rally the Lady Bucs to a 10-7 win in game two, giving ETSU the sweep. Martin - who finished 4-for-4 in the nightcap - began the rally by hitting her first collegiate home run to lead off the fourth inning, and it was her two-run scoring single in the top of the seventh that snapped a 7-7 tie. Martin's 4-for-4 effort was a career high and it also tied the Lady Buccaneer record for most hits in a single-game. The Centerville, Tenn. began the doubleheader with a 3-for-4 performance in game one in Cullowhee, and also sparked the Lady Bucs with a two-run scoring single in game two versus Radford on Friday.

Once again it was Hardy's dominate performance in the circle that carried her to a second Pitcher of the Week honor of her career. The reliable right-hander continued her powerful ways last week as she helped guide the Lady Bucs to a sweep over Western Carolina on Wednesday night in Cullowhee, N.C. The Rocklin, Calif. native picked up both wins in the circle for ETSU (one start/one relief) and tossed 9.2 innings of allowing one unearned run. Hardy tossed her school-record seventh shutout in game one, as the Lady Bucs won 2-0. Then, in the nightcap, Hardy entered with one out in the fifth and ETSU trailing, but the reliable right-hander did just enough in the circle and finally got some offensive support as the Lady Bucs rallied to 10-7 victory en route to Hardy's team-best 17th win of the year.

This marks the first time all season ETSU won a Player of the Week honor and the first since Hardy won Pitcher of the Week on April 16, 2007.

Martin, Hardy and the entire Lady Buccaneer softball team will now gear up for the 2009 Atlantic Sun Championship, presented by Holiday Inn Express. ETSU kicks off play on Thursday, May 7, when the Lady Bucs take on Lipscomb at 11 a.m. inside Stetson's Patricia Wilson Field.
