BOONE, N.C. (May 4, 2011) - Senior Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) set the ETSU career hits record with his homer in the sixth as the Buccaneer baseball team defeated Appalachian State 5-3 Wednesday night at Jim and Betty Smith Stadium in Boone, N.C.
Hoilman tied the hits record previously held by Shane Byrne in the top of the fourth on his double to left scoring Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) from first. The double also tied the Atlantic Sun career doubles record set by Frank Corr of Stetson in 2001 with 79.
In the top of the sixth, Hoilman put the Bucs back in front as he crushed a 2-2 pitch over the wall in left center to make the score 4-2. The homer gave Hoilman 291 career hits to claim the record.
The win is the sixth straight for the Bucs (28-15, 12-10 A-Sun) dating back to the 7-3 win over Kennesaw State on April 23.
Freshman Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) was exceptional in relief for the Buccaneers limiting the Mountaineers (26-19, 10-11 SoCon) to two runs on six hits in 5.0 innings to improve to 3-2. Starter Scott McNally (Marietta, Ga.) threw 3.0 scoreless innings in a no decision for ETSU, while   Seth Grant was tabbed with the loss for ASU after surrendering four runs on four hits in 3.0 innings.
Appalachian State outhit the Bucs 11-7 on the night. Hoilman and Reeder had a game-high two hits in the contest to lead the way offensively.
After Hoilman's RBI double in the fourth, the Bucs added another run later in the inning on a sac fly to center by shortstop Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) to make the score 2-0.
The Mountaineers answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame as Zack Briggs singled in Jack Myers from second to cut the Buccaneer advantage to 2-1.
ASU tied the game at 2-all in the top of the fifth on a RBI ground out by catcher Jeremy Dowdy.
In the bottom half of the sixth inning, left fielder Cory Betterson (Atlanta, Ga.) made a spectacular catch robbing Myers of a home run to preserve the two run lead for the Bucs. Betterson leaped up and over the fence in left to make the grab as his arm completely disappeared over the wall before bring the ball back with the catch.
The Buccaneers added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to take a 5-2 lead. Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) led off the inning with a single to right to extend his hit streak to nine-games. Later in the inning, Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.) singled up the middle to score Scruggs from second.
Reeder came in to close out the contest for the Bucs in the ninth inning to pick up his 15th save of the year putting him only one back of Jamie Emiliano for the A-Sun single season saves record.
The Bucs are back in action on Friday at 6:30 p.m. as they head to N.C. State for a three-game non-conference series. For more information on Buccaneer baseball, visit ETSUBucs.com or follow the Bucs on Twitter at http://twitter.com/ETSUAthletics.
