JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 2, 2012) – Head East Tennessee State University softball coach Brad Irwin announced Thursday afternoon that former Virginia Tech pitcher, Kenzie Roark, will join his staff this fall as ETSU’s pitching coach.

Roark compiled an impressive resume during her five-years at Virginia Tech.  The Mt. Juliet, Tenn. native, spent last season as a student assistant on the coaching staff that was named 2012 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic Region coaching staff of the year.  She helped guide the Hokie pitching staff to a 2.52 earned run average which was good for third in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) as Virginia Tech made it the NCAA Regionals.

“We are extremely excited to add Kenzie to our staff.  Kenzie brings passion, knowledge and excitement to our program,” said Irwin.  “Kenzie had a successful career at Virginia Tech and received tremendous coaching from coaches Scot Thomas, Barb Sherwood, and Al Brauns.  She also had the opportunity to work alongside them in a coaching role and comes highly recommended.”

The former Hokie was the team’s ace in her final two seasons and earned 2010 ACC first-team all-tournament honors.  Roark was named ACC Pitcher of the Week and Virginia Tech Athlete of the Week on April 5, 2010, for her 3-0 week which include a victory against UNCG and a pair of wins versus Florida State.   Roark was the Hokies’ No. 2 pitcher as a freshman behind All-American Angela Tincher as they won the ACC Championship and participated in the 2008 Women’s College World Series.

Roark, who ended her colligate career as one of Virginia Tech’s all-time best pitchers, as she is second all-time with 155 appearances, fourth all-time in strikeouts (510) and innings pitched (661.1) and sixth in wins (51) and opponents batting average (.254).

"We look forward to the immediate positive impact she will have on our pitching staff because she is a great student of the game,” stated Irwin.
