Bucs avoid perfect game with two hits in seventh

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (April 14, 2013) – Northern Kentucky starting pitcher Emily Schwaeble tossed a near-perfect game while earning a hit and an RBI at the plate to lead NKU to a series sweep of the ETSU softball team, 4-0, Sunday afternoon from Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field.

Schwaeble (4-16) sent the first 18 ETSU (10-29, 0-19 A-Sun) batters down in order – recording eight strikeouts along the way – and entered the last with her team ahead by four. Redshirt sophomore Nicole Fox (Peachtree City, Ga.) broke up the bid, lining a first-pitch leadoff single over the glove of third baseman Taylor Zuberer and into left field. Senior Sam Lower (Sebring, Fla.) later doubled, but it was all the Buccaneers could muster as Northern Kentucky (10-30, 4-14 A-Sun) and Schwaeble took the two-hit shutout for a three-game sweep.

ETSU right-hander Katie Wolff (LaGrange, Texas) took the loss (4-16), going the distance and allowing four earned runs on a season-high 10 hits. Wolff walked and struck out one apiece.

NKU took the lead in the first. With Natalie Papi and KC Straley occupying second and third, Schwaeble dribbled a check-swing single off the third-base bag and into left, scoring Straley to put the Norse on top.

Three more runs came across in the fourth to give Schwaeble some breathing room. Again, Wolff faced runners on second and third with one out, but threw a pitch in the dirt that skipped to the backstop to score pinch-runner Alesa Collinsworth. During the same at-bat, Dee Dee Davis made it a four-run game with one swing, hooking her third home run of the season around the left-field foul pole.

The cushion paid dividends in the seventh, making Fox’s single and Lower’s double less of a threat. The two Bucs were stranded on second and third following two pop outs.

The ETSU softball team has a pair of non-conference doubleheaders scheduled for the midweek, beginning Tuesday in Greenville, S.C., against Furman. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
