Bucs at Furman Tuesday, App State Wednesday
GREENVILLE, S.C. and BOONE, N.C. (April 15, 2013) – The ETSU softball team has a pair midweek doubleheaders against old rivals from the Southern Conference on Tuesday and Wednesday, as it continues its 12-game road trip against Furman and Appalachian State.
ETSU (10-29, 0-19 A-Sun) and Furman (22-19, 7-7 SoCon) get underway on Tuesday from Pepsi Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday, the Buccaneers head to Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium for a twinbill with Appalachian State (21-15, 13-5 SoCon) beginning at 4 p.m.
The Bucs hope to put an end to an eight-game losing streak which started April 6 against Lipscomb.
The Buccaneer Breakdown
Senior Sam Lower (Sebring, Fla.) has been swinging a hot bat and is hitting .500 (6-12) over the last three series, including two doubles, a triple, a run scored and two batted in. The shortstop reached base safely in six consecutive plate appearances over the stretch and has raised her season average to .269.
All other Buccaneers with 10 or more at-bats have struggled during the losing streak. Sophomore Alex Everett (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) leads the rest of the pack with a .214 mark, with all other Bucs hitting .174 or below.
Redshirt sophomore Nicole Fox (Peachtree City, Ga.) continues to lead the season in batting average at .324. Fox also carries season-highs of 19 runs scored, 45 hits and 13 stolen bases.
The rest of ETSU’s offense has dipped below .300.with the team average falling to ninth in the A-Sun at .261.
In the power categories, junior Jackie Baird (Ooltewah, Tenn.) is the home run leader with four to go along with 12 runs scored and 21 RBIs. Baird’s team-RBI lead was taken away over the weekend by sophomore Casey Horner (Whitesburg, Tenn.), who hit a three-run home run in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader to jump to 22.
In the circle, junior Katie Wolff (LaGrange, Texas) has seen her ERA jump to 3.02. Wolff (4-16) remains consistent and gives the Buccaneers chances to win ball games, tossing 14 complete games in 127.2 innings of work. The junior has struck out a team high 62 batters, while also walking a team-high 63.
The ETSU staff carries a 4.29 ERA with 126 strikeouts compared to 133 walks. Opposing batting average against the Bucs’ pitching is up to .292.
The Paladins are coming off a three-game series in which it hosted the Big 12’s Kansas Jayhawks. Furman took one of the three games thanks to Lauren Collier’s two-hit shutout, 2-0, en route to Collier being named Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week. Prior to the KU series, Furman had won three straight, shutting out Western Carolina and Charlotte twice.
Ambree Muller is Furman’s top hitter with a .308 average. Muller carries other team-highs of 24 runs scored, 36 hits, seven stolen bases and six home runs to go along with 13 RBIs. Taylor Jenkins shares Muller’s home run lead, but has been much more productive in terms of driving in runs with the most RBIs at 31. Other top hitters include Stephanie Field (.275, 12 R, 11 RBIs) and Collier (.265, 18 R, 24 RBIs).
Furman hits .248 as team with 20 home runs in its 41 games.
The aforementioned Collier is also the Paladins’ top pitcher with a record of 11-8 and a team-low ERA of 1.90. Collier has made 16 starts, tossing nine complete games and four shutouts. The reigning SoCon Pitcher of the Week also has a tremendous ratio of strikeouts to walks with 85 Ks and 27 free passes in 117.2 innings. Megan Houston is the No. 2 option with an impressive 2.30 ERA in 14 starts.
As a staff, the Paladins limit the opposition to just 2.34 earned runs per seven innings and average nearly five strikeouts per game.
Scouting Appalachian State
ASU takes on No. 3 Tennessee on Tuesday in Knoxville before hosting the Bucs. Prior to the matchup with the Lady Vols, App State has won six of its last eight games, including a five-game winning streak along the way. The streak came to an end this past weekend as it dropped two-of-three to UNC Greensboro.
Sarah Warnock is currently on a 15-game hitting streak with a .510 batting average and 26 hits since March 23 against Chattanooga. Warnock boasts a team-high .397 batting average and 50 hits. A catcher, Warnock posts a .971 fielding percentage and has only committed five errors on the season.
Allie Cashion has a .394 batting average on the season and has lined a team-high 14 doubles on the season. Cashion ranks second on the team with 41 hits and posts a .364 batting average with runners on base as she has driven in a team-high 34 RBIs on the season.
Lindsey Loudermilk is the final App to post a batting average over .300 as she is hitting .316 on the season with 36 hits and 29 RBIs. Meanwhile, sophomore Ashley Seering and senior Meghan Smith have both tallied over 20 RBIs on the season with Seering at 22 and Smith at 21.
In the circle, it is Alissa Schoelkopf who leads the way at 13-9 with a team-best ERA of 3.60 with 19 starts and 12 complete games. Schoelkopf has mowed down 108 batters in her 130.1 innings of work to lead the Mountaineers in strikeouts. The No. 2 option is Shivaun Landeros with an 8-5 mark to go along with her 4.16 ERA. Landeros has made 15 starts, going the distance in seven.
The ASU staff boasts a 4.07 ERA and strikes out 4.5 batters per game.
ETSU has contested 29 games against Furman and 31 against Appalachian State in the all-time series. The Bucs are ahead 18-11 versus Furman and carry a bigger advantage of 22-9 against App. Last season, ETSU and App State met once with the Mountaineers coming out on top, 13-9, in Boone. ETSU’s last matchup with Furman came in 2011, splitting a doubleheader in Johnson City.
