Bucs struggle at plate, combine for six hits
DELAND, Fla. (April 20, 2013) – The ETSU softball team opened a three-game Atlantic Sun series at Stetson on Saturday afternoon, dropping both contests by scores of 2-0 and 3-0.
ETSU (12-31, 0-21 A-Sun) struggled on offense, earning just six hits against the Stetson (27-18, 10-11 A-Sun) ace Meredith Owen (18-7), who pitched back-to-back shutouts and combined for 12 strikeouts – eight in game two. Owen also had a good day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a run and three RBIs. She helped her own cause in the first inning of the nightcap, launching a two-run homer to put her side on top by the eventual 3-0 final.
For the Bucs on offense, junior Jackie Baird (Ooltewah, Tenn.) had the best showing, going 2-for-3 in game two with a double. Redshirt sophomore Nicole Fox (Peachtree City, Ga.) was the lone Buccaneer to earn a hit in each game, and also stole her team-leading 15th base of the season.
Junior Katie Wolff (LaGrange, Texas) started the opener, tossing her 16th complete game and allowing two runs on five hits, striking out four. Sophomore Whitney Leon (Dandridge, Tenn.) got the nod in game two, punching out three in six innings while allowing the three runs on four hits.
The Bucs hope to take a game in the series finale, scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
