GREENSBORO, N.C. (April 25, 2015) - ETSU was unable to contain UNC Greensboro's high-powered offense during Saturday's doubleheader, as the Spartans narrowly edged ETSU, 12-10, in Game One, and topped the Bucs, 11-3, in Game Two. The third and final game of the Southern Conference series will take place Sunday, April 26 at 1:00 p.m.
The Spartans (19-19, 4-9 SoCon) got off to a hot start in the day's opening game, plating six runs highlighted by home runs by two of their leading batters, Tory Wright and Nicole Thomas.
ETSU sliced its deficit in the fourth inning as the Bucs scored five times to narrow UNCG's leading margin to 6-5.
The Buccaneers (12-28, 1-13 SoCon) began the inning by loading the bases following a drawn walk by Bethany Cowart (Ringgold, Ga.) and consecutive singles by Cassie Pickett (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Kelsey Smith (Tucson, Ariz.).
Alex Everett (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) drove home the inning's first run on a single through the right side. The next batter, Casey Horner (Whitesburg, Tenn.), then followed suit with a two-RBI single. A pair of fielder's choice plays scored the Bucs' remaining two runs of the inning, drawing ETSU to within one run of UNCG at 6-5.
ETSU then took advantage of a pair of UNCG errors in the fifth inning to plate three more runs, extending the Bucs' lead to 8-6.
The Bucs tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run home run by Taylor Carter (Brazil, Ind.), her fourth long ball of the season.
Trailing 10-6, UNCG responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut its deficit to 10-8.
Following a pair of ground outs to begin the bottom of the seventh, the Spartans were down to their final out of the game, still trailing, 10-8.
A costly ETSU fielding error then allowed UNCG's Allison Geiner to reach base, setting the table for Danielle Vega's two-run, game-tying home run.
Nicole Thomas then drew a walk to put the game-winning run on base for the Spartans. Lindsay Thomas sealed UNCG's win with a two-run home run down the left field line.
Six ETSU players recorded hits in Game One. Three players: Everett, Carter, and Horner each drove in a pair of runs as the Bucs scored their most runs in a single game since March 21.
Freshman Malloree Schurr followed up her 3-for-4 showing in her first career start with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate.
Unfortunately for ETSU, the Spartans' offense continued to hum in Game Two of Saturday's doubleheader, as UNCG plated 11 runs on 13 hits en route to an 11-3 win.
UNCG entered the weekend ranking second in the Southern Conference for scoring, averaging 5.50 runs per contest.
Like Game One, six ETSU players recorded hits in Game Two, including Smith, who drove in two of the Bucs' three runs.
Schurr, Pickett, Nicole Fox (Peachtree City, Ga.), Danielle Knoetze (San Diego, Calif.), and Kelsey Chernak (Ooltewah, Tenn.) also recorded hits.
ETSU will look to cap off its three-game series versus UNCG on a positive note as the Bucs take on the Spartans Sunday, April 26 at 1:00 p.m.
