ETSU commits four errors; Bucs allow five two-out runs

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 10, 2018) – The ETSU softball team committed four errors and allowed five two-out runs, as Austin Peay blanked the Buccaneers, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon at Betty Basler Field.

In a game that appeared to be a pitchers’ duel with it being a scoreless affair after three complete innings, Austin Peay broke things open by plating four two-out runs in the top of the fourth to take command of the contest. To add more salt in ETSU’s wound, the Governors added two unearned runs in the sixth and plated three runs in the seventh to hold a nine-run advantage.

Senior Madison Ogle (Maryville, Tenn.) suffered the loss (5-5) after allowing four runs on seven hits in four innings of work, while sophomore Marissa Honeycutt (Kingsport, Tenn.) surrendered five runs (three earned) on five hits in three innings.

Morgan Rackel (4-2) tossed her second shutout of the season by limiting the Bucs to three hits and struck out nine in the complete-game win.

Lauren Lee (Cleveland, Tenn.), Vanessa Elliott (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Julia Fritz (Glen Allen, Va.) accounted for the three Buccaneer singles.

ETSU threatened in the sixth when they loaded the bases but were unable to capitalize as Rackel forced Tiffany Laughren (Erwin, Tenn.) to foul out to first.

Four Austin Peay players posted two-hit games as the Governors out-hit the Bucs, 12-3. Seven of Austin Peay’s hits came via two-outs.

With the loss, ETSU dipped to 8-10, while Austin Peay – who defeated Jackson State earlier on Saturday – improved to 8-7.

ETSU wraps up play at the Buccaneer Classic on Sunday when the Blue and Gold take on Jackson State at 11:15 a.m., and Austin Peay at 1:30 p.m. The tournament begins at 9 a.m. when Austin Peay faces Saint Peter’s.
