Former ETSU standout Davies qualifies for 2009 British Open

At the U.S. Open in 2007, Davies (right) played his practice round alongside Zach Johnson (left), who had won the Masters just two months earlier.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 9, 2009) – Competing for a spot in the 2009 British Open next month, former ETSU standout Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) needed to finish in the Top 10 during the final international qualifying Monday in Sunningdale, England.

Davies, who qualified for and played in the 2007 U.S. Open just weeks after graduating from ETSU, fired rounds of 65 and 67 to post an 8-under-par 132 and finish sixth in the qualifier earlier this week. A total of 96 players were competing for 10 spots in next month’s tournament at Turnberry.

A holder of multiple ETSU records including most career wins with 10, Davies was a three-time All-American for the Buccaneers and spent much of his senior season ranked No. 1 in the country. He has spent the last two years playing professionally in Asia and Europe.
