John Vogt started working with the ETSU vaulting squad in 2004.

Under his watchful eye in 2006 both the men and women pole vault squads set four school pole vault records and received three all-conference honors. The Buccaneer vaulters did not miss a beat in 2007, as Drew Beamer set the ETSU indoor record with a leap of 15-01 (4.60m), set at the Atlantic Sun Championships. Beamer also received all-conference honors at the outdoor conference championships, which was also held in Johnson City.

This season Vogt will be kept busy as three men vaulters returned to the squad, and two newcomers join the team as well. The new faces include standout Taylor Isgrig (Weaverville, N.C.) and Matt Baum (Middletown, Md.). Dave Thomas (Maryville, Tenn.), Jordan Briggs (Erwin, Tenn.) and Beamer all return from last season's squad.

Coach Vogt got hooked on vaulting in his senior year when he adapted quickly to the first fiberglass poles around. Over the years his insight into the sport has increased through coaching clinics, officiating at national collegiate meets and working with AAU youth track groups.

Coach Vogt’s last year of coaching at Science Hill High School resulted in both the girls and boys breaking their school records. Coach Vogt works hard to develop our athletes in all three spheres needed to be successful in life after college—“not just in body, but also in mind and spirit.”
