Johnson City, Tenn. (September 3, 2002) - Head coach Deane Webb and the East Tennessee State volleyball team picked up their first win of the season Tuesday night in front of a lively crowd at Brooks Gym, as the Buccaneers (1-3) pulled out a 3-0 sweep over visiting Lincoln Memorial (1-4). It took the Bucs just over one hour and a half to shutout the Lady Railsplitters 30-22, 30-24, 30-25.
"It's definitely nice to get the first win under our belts," Webb said following the match. "We did a nice job of playing our game and playing within ourselves. We also appreciate all the fans coming out for a weeknight game versus a non-conference opponent."
Freshman Nicole Ryan (Etiwanda, Calif.) led ETSU with 14 kills on 26 attempts (.462), while junior Lissa Allen (Palm Bay, Fla.) converted on .526 of her attempts, finishing the evening with 11 kills. Pre-season All-Southern Conference selection Katie Steidle served up five aces against the Lincoln Memorial defense, while Renee Vesey (Paw Paw, Mich.) played very well at the setter position, tallying 34 assists for the Bucs.
"We did a great job of running our middle with Lissa in there, and Renee did a good job of distributing the ball," Webb said. "It was a nice balanced attack.
"We are hoping we can take some momentum with us this weekend," he added. "Tonight was a good start and hopefully we can build on this win."
East Tennessee State will leave on Friday for Birmingham, Ala. where the Bucs will play in a tournament hosted by Alabama-Birmingham. ETSU plays two matches on friday, beginning with Tennessee State at 4:00 p.m. and then Troy State at 8:00 p.m. The team will return home after concluding tournament play against UAB at 11:00 a.m on Saturday, Sept. 7.
