SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Nov. 20, 2003) --
The 2003 Southern Conference Volleyball Championships begin on Friday, November 22 and run through Sunday, November 24 at Maclellan Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in Chattanooga, TN.
This year's championships feature a full day of quarterfinals action on Friday, beginning with a first round rematch from last season, as the first seed from the North, Appalachian State, plays the fourth seed from the South, Davidson, at 10:00 a.m., followed by #2S Georgia Southern versus #3N Western Carolina at 12:00 p.m. The afternoon matches on Friday start at 3:00 p.m. with another rematch from the 2002 first round as #1S College of Charleston faces #4N East Tennessee State. Friday's final match involves the host team, #2N Chattanooga against #3S Furman.
Tournament passes are $25.00 for adults and $12.00 for students, ages 18 and under. Single day passes for Friday and Saturday are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for students and will be available at the gate on game day. Single day tickets for Sunday's championship match are $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for students. Students of all SoCon member institutions will receive free admission to the 2003 SoCon Volleyball Championships with a valid student ID from a SoCon institution.
College of Charleston (17-1) and Appalachian State (13-5) enter the tournament as the number one seeds from the South and North Divisions, respectively. The Cougars shared the South Division title with Georgia Southern (17-1), but College of Charleston was awarded the top spot by means of a coin flip between the two schools. The second seed from the North is the host school, Chattanooga (12-6) while the third seeds are Western Carolina (8-10) from the North and Furman (12-6) from the South. Davidson (7-11) claimed the South Division number four seed while East Tennessee State (7-11) is fourth from the North. The Buccaneers and Elon finished the regular season with identical 7-11 conference records. ETSU and Elon split in head-to-head meetings during the regular season, and both schools lost twice to North Division champion Appalachian State. However, ETSU split with second place Chattanooga while the Phoenix dropped both matches to the Lady Mocs. Thus, East Tennessee State was awarded the fourth seed from the North via the conference's tiebreaker system.
The winner of the first match, Appalachian State or Davidson, will face the winner of Friday's second match, Georgia Southern or Western Carolina, at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. The winner of Friday's third match, College of Charleston or East Tennessee State, will battle the winner of Friday's late game, Chattanooga or Furman, at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. The championship match will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
College of Charleston is the defending Southern Conference Tournament Champion. Last year, the Cougars swept Georgia Southern, 3-0, in the championship match held on the campus of Davidson College. With the Southern Conference automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, College of Charleston was defeated by Notre Dame in a first round match.
