Clemson, S.C. (Sept. 20, 2003) -- East Tennessee State fell to 1-11 on the season following a hard-fought battle with Illinois-Chicago (6-7) at the 2003 Clemson Invitational, as ETSU lost 3-1 to the Flames.
UIC won the first two games by scores of 30-26 and 30-17, respectively. Then the Buccaneers retaliated with a 30-28 win in game three, before falling 30-22 in game four.
Overall, a number of individuals contributed season-best performances for the Buccaneers. Freshman Kelsey Sherich (Ogallala, Neb.) finished with 16 kills, sophomore Kristi Robinson (Knoxville, Tenn.) served up 44 assists, and junior Karen Freeburg (Newcastle, Ind.) tallied 12 digs -- all season-highs for the Bucs in 2003.
Freeburg and Robinson each garnered their second double-double of the season. Freeburg notched 10 kills to go with her 12 digs, while Robinson ended up with 11 digs to go along with her 44 assists. Senior Kate Steidle (Waynesboro, Va.) was the only other Bucs to finish with double-digits in kills with 10.
Leading the way for UIC was Teaha Sheppard, who had a match-high seven service aces and 18 kills. Sheppard also registered 16 kills as did teammate Jordan Studzinski. As a team, the Flames served up a total of 14 aces.
ETSU will be in action again at 4:30 p.m., when the Bucs take on Charleston Southern.
