JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct.. 24, 2008) - The ETSU volleyball team was swept by Florida Gulf Coast in three sets Friday night in Brooks Gym, 3-0 (15-25, 21-25, 21-25).
The Bucs (7-14, 4-9 A-Sun) were led offensively by Erin Ryan (Davie, Fla.) who had ten kills on the night and hit .692 (10-1-13). Whitney Cogburn (Kingsport, Tenn.) tallied eight kills and six digs.
Junior Amanda Youell (Middleburg, Fla.) quarterbacked the ETSU offensive as she collected 30 assists and seven digs.
The Eagles jumped out in front early in the first set taking a 10-5 lead after rallies of four and five points. FGCU's Ana Kokanovic led the way with nine kills in the set, as the Eagles took the set, 25-15.
Play was back and fourth in the second set, as the Bucs had a four-point run to cut the FGCU lead to 19-17. ETSU then tied the set at 19-all after an Eagle error, but Kokanovic again was too much as FGCU went on to win the set, 25-20, taking a 2-0 lead into the break. Lauren Baufield (Plymouth, Minn.) played tough for the Bucs as she had five kills in the set.
In the third set, play was back and forth again, but with the score tied 12-12 the Eagles went on a four-point run to take a 16-12 lead. ETSU cut the score to two points,20-18, but could not overcome a late four-point rally by FGCU as the Eagles went on to win the set by a final of 25-21.
