Johnson City, Tenn.-- East Tennessee State junior setter Carey Cavanaugh had her second consecutive stellar match, notching 26 assists, six kills and five digs as the Buccaneers defeated The Citadel Bulldogs 3-0 in volleyball action Friday evening from Brooks Gym.
Junior outside hitter Amber Ciskowski had nine kills to lead the Bucs in for the second consecutive match. Freshman outside hitter Gretchen Rupert led ETSU in digs with seven and also added five kills against just one hitting error. As a team, the Buccaneers had 39 kills against just 15 hitting errors, outhitting The Citadel .279 to -.080.
The Buccaneers (14-10, 10-6) won game one 15-1 after scoring the final ten points. Freshman outside hitter Rachel Shifflet tallied three service aces in game one, while Ciskowski and senior outside hitter Courtney Sussillo registered four kills each. The Citadel began the second game on a 7-2 run, but the Buccaneers responded by taking another ten straight points, eventually winning the game 15-9. In the third and final game, ETSU won eight of the first 11 points, helping them to take the final game, 15-4.
The Citadel was led by sophomore outside hitter Nicole Mantu, who led the Bulldogs with five kills and tied for the team lead in digs with six. Freshman setter Desiree Browning paced The Citadel with nine assists.
The Buccaneers return to the hardwood on Homecoming, Saturday, November 3rd at noon when they face the College of Charleston Cougars from Brooks Gym.
