Statesboro, Ga.. Georgia Southern dropped its second straight heart stopper to a Southern Conference foe as East Tennessee State defeated the Eagles 3-2 in volleyball action at Hanner Fieldhouse Saturday evening.
The Buccaneers (4-4, 2-1) were led by Katie Steidle with 14 kills, seven service aces, and 10 digs. Jena Policastro and Jessica Miller also recorded double-digit digs for ETSU with 11 a piece.
The Buccaneers got off to a quick start as they scored the first nine points of the game one in route to claiming a 15-9 win. Georgia Southern (6-4, 2-2) returned the favor in the second game, winning the first 10 points, to tie the match with a 15-7 win. Game three proved to be closer as the two teams traded points and side outs before the Eagles were finally able to claim a 15-10 victory.
Momentum quickly shifted back to the Buccaneers as they recorded seven service aces en route to a 15-7 game four victory. The deciding contest saw little good happen for the Eagles as they recorded just one kill against four errors. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers used nine kills and no errors to cruise to a 15-4 victory.
Freshman Megan Lippi led the Eagles with 16 kills and 16 assists. Fellow freshman Erin Martin also recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs while junior Amanda Brooks finished with 14 digs and 43 assists.
Georgia Southern returns to action next Saturday, September 23 when it travels to Chattanooga in a Southern Conference match beginning at 2:00 p.m. East Tennessee State returns home to face Southern Conference rival Wofford at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 24.
