Volleyball Wins Ninth Straight Match, Defeating UNC Greensboro, 3-0
Saturday, October 06, 2001Johnson City, Tenn. -- The East Tennessee State volleyball team won their ninth straight match and stayed undefeated at home with a 3-0 (30-15, 30-17, 30-19) victory over UNC Greensboro Saturday afternoon from Brooks Gym. The Bucs jumped out to a 13-2 lead to begin to first game. East Tennessee State would cruise from there, winning game one 30-15. The second game was very similar to game one, with ETSU starting the game with a 8-1 lead. UNCG would cut the lead to 8-3, but that was as close as the Spartans would come as the Bucs would prevail, 30-17. Game three started out 3-3 as the two teams traded points to begin the stanza. The Bucs would open up a small lead, but the Spartans closed the ETSU lead to 8-7. From then on, the Bucs would steadily build a lead, with the largest margin being the final score, 30-19. The Bucs were led by senior outside hitter Amber Ciskowski, who registered a game-high 13 kills against just one error for an .600 hitting percentage. Freshman Natalie Atzinger also had double-digit kills, tallying 11. Senior setter Carey Cavanaugh had a game-high 33 assists, and added 11 digs. Freshman Karen Freeburg had seven kills and a game-high 13 digs on the afternoon. UNC Greensboro was led by setter Robyn Jameson who had a team-high 18 assists and five kills. She shared the team lead in kills with LaJean Morrow and Rebekah Faulise who also had five. Dawn Bright and Sarah Bosch tied for the lead in digs for the Spartans with seven. With the win, the Bucs move to 12-1 on the season, first place in the Southern Conference with a 8-1 record. UNC Greensboro falls to 1-17, 1-7 in conference play. The Bucs have been phenomenal at home in Brooks Gym, going 6-0 and winning 18 games compared to their opponents one. The Bucs are just one win short of their school record winning streak which was recorded in 1987 with 10 straight victories. ETSU's only loss was a tough 3-2 defeat at Western Carolina. The Bucs return to action on Friday, October 12 as they host Chattanooga at 7 p.m.
