Friday, October 05, 2001

Johnson City, Tenn. -- The East Tennessee State volleyball team defeated Davidson 3-0 (30-13, 30-20, 30-25) Friday night from Brooks Gym for their eight-straight win, matching the third-longest winning streak in school history. The first game opened close with both teams trading points. The Bucs would eventually open up a 10-6 lead, and would go on a 20-7 run to close the game. The second game was very similar to the first. The Bucs and Wildcats traded points early, but the Bucs would open up a small lead as the game drew on. ETSU would slowly build on to their lead until it reached 10, the final margin of victory in game two. Game three was even closer than the previous two, as there was no more than a five point lead for either team throughout the game. The Bucs held the advantage for most of the game, but Davidson trimmed the ETSU lead to one on many occasions. The Wildcats cut the ETSU lead to 23-22, but that was as close as the game would get. The Bucs would close the game and the match on a 7-3 run. Sophomore outside hitter Kate Steidle led the Bucs with 10 kills and a match-high 13 digs. Senior setter Carey Cavanaugh tallied a match-high 32 assists for the Buccaneers. Davidson was led by Meredith Lorenz who tallied a team-high eight kills and 10 digs. Setter Nicole Tonelli recorded 22 assists for the Wildcats. The Buccaneers return to action as they host UNC Greensboro Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. from Brooks Gym.
