JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 1, 2003) - Lindsey Devine has been named the next head volleyball coach at East Tennessee State. After one full season as a volunteer assistant, Devine served as the Buccaneer's temporary assistant coach since January, while a search was conducted to fill the head coaching vacancy. A native of Toronto, Canada, Devine becomes ETSU's seventh head volleyball coach since the program began in 1974. "I am very excited about the opportunity and challenge given to me by East Tennessee State to bring the volleyball program to a new level," said Devine. "I look forward to bringing that same excitement to the players, staff, and supporters of ETSU athletics." Devine attended York University in Toronto, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in English and physical education in 1988 and bachelor of science degree in education in 1990. She played outside hitter for the university from 1984 to 1988, leading her team to four all-province titles during those years, including a bronze medal at the National Championships in 1985. After her playing career, Devine went on to coach the Durham Attack Volleyball Club, one of the top amateur programs in the province of Ontario. Devine was named the Coach-of-the-Year in 1999-00, when her team was awarded silver medallist accolades at the Ontario Provincial Championships. She served as an assistant coach with the club team when Durham won back-to-back gold medals from 1997-99. Devine, who resides in Kingsport, Tenn., with her husband Carl and two children Megan and Owen, was the junior varsity coach at Science Hill High School in Johnson City in 2002. For the past year, Devine has been heavily involved in the Buccaneer Junior Volleyball Club, where she was the co-coach for the 18-year-old elite team, and has also helped coordinate the East Tennessee State volleyball camps. "Lindsey Devine brings outstanding credentials to our program as a player and a coach of elite athletes for many years," said Barbie Breedlove, associate director of athletics. "Our student-athletes and university will benefit greatly from her maturity, integrity, and expertise. She has run our program very effectively on a temporary basis since January, and I am certain she will do an outstanding job going forward." Dave Mullins, East Tennessee State's director of athletics, has also been pleased with the work of Devine and the duties she assumed in her short time with the ETSU volleyball program. "Our departmental staff and I have been very impressed with the way Lindsey Devine has worked with our program first as an assistant coach and then as an interim coach while we conducted our search," Mullins said. "Her commitment to excellence will be great for our players and our department. I hope we can give stability to our volleyball program for years to come. Her family has become part of our community and I know she will be a great asset in many ways."
