Davidson volleyball takes out ETSU in four games

DAVIDSON, N.C. (November 7, 2003) - Led by freshman Jenna Dykstra's bid at a triple-double, the Davidson volleyball team fought off East Tennessee State Friday evening in Belk Arena, 30-22, 20-30, 30-20 and 30-27. The Wildcats (13-18, 6-9 SoCon) have now won three years in a row at home against ETSU (7-20, 5-10). Dykstra needed just one more dig for her third triple-double of the year. The outside hitter/setter paced the Wildcats with 18 kills, 20 assists and nine digs. She hit a personal-best .441 against the Bucs as well. The fourth game was the closest of the evening. East Tennessee State built a slim 11-7 lead early, but that would be the largest spread of the game. Davidson quickly fought back to tie the score at 11, which started a string of 13 ties that culminated at 25-25. After a kill by junior Meredith Lorenz put the Wildcats ahead 26-25, Davidson captured the ensuing extended rally to go up by two points, 27-25. The 'Cats did not relinquish the lead the rest of the way in the 30-27 triumph. Davidson held East Tennessee State to only nine kills in the first game and pulled away late for a 30-22 win. ETSU turned the tables in game two, notching 17 kills to go along with a .455 attack percentage to level the match at one game apiece. In the third game, the Wildcats rolled off six consecutive points to create an early 8-2 cushion. Davidson was never threatened after that run and easily took the game, 30-20. Lorenz (14 kills) and senior Latisha Chapman (12) added double-figure putaways for the 'Cats in the balanced attack. Meanwhile, senior Nicole Tonelli led the defensive efforts with 15 digs while chipping in with 37 assists. Kelsey Sherich (Ogallala, Neb.) and Kate Steidle (Waynesboro, Va.) each had standout performances for ETSU. Sherich tallied 18 kills on a .417 attack percentage while Steidle registered 12 putaways and a .345 hitting percentage. East Tennessee State continues its road weekend on Sunday, Nov. 9, at Georgia Southern with a starting time of 1 p.m.
