Lady Bucs swept at Georgia State

Sunday, October 31, 2004

ATLANTA, GA. (Oct. 31, 2004) - The ETSU volleyball squad fell to the Georgia State University Panthers (11-15) today in non-conference action.  East Tennessee State (4-20, 3-9 SoCon) fell 3-0 (30-22, 30-13, 30-18) this afternoon at the Sports Arena in downtown Atlanta.

State struggled in the opening game, playing from behind for most of the first 30 points of the game.  Tied 15-all, the Lady Panthers staged a 6-0 run on the serve of senior April DeCoste, including a pair of service aces for the senior.  The Lady Panthers extended the lead to seven at 28-21 following a service ace by junior Carol Mattos.  From there, the Lady Panthers would hold on, taking the opener 30-22.

Game two saw the Lady Panthers step on the throttle early and not let up, going on a 7-0 run to go up 12-5 in the second stanza.  A pair of 5-0 runs later, State was up 23-11.  The Lady Panthers finished off the second game after an attack error by ETSU gave State game two 30-13.

State trailed the third game 1-0, but the ETSU lead didn't stay, as an 8-0 run sparked by three van Dam blocks.  A Mattos kill gave State match point 29-17.  ETSU fought off one before a service error gave the Lady Panthers game three 30-18 and the match 3-0.

In the loss, Lady Bucs middle hitter Callie Kiselich (Colorado Springs, Co.) and right-side hitter Sara Scandiffio (Purcellville, Va.) each posted six kills, while setter Jennifer Sartor (Toronto, Canada) managed 19 assists for the afternoon.  Senior Karen Freeburg (New Castle, Ind.) posted eight digs adding one ace for the match.

ETSU continues non-conference action Tuesday Nov. 2 as they travel to Radford in a 7:00 p.m. match-up before facing Chattanooga on Nov. 6 at 7:00 p.m. in Southern Conference action.
