Lady Bucs conclude play at Mizuno/Auburn challenge

Auburn, Ala. (Sep. 4, 2004) - The East Tennessee State volleyball squad suffered a 3-0 (30-22, 30-16, 30-22) setback at the hands of the Iowa State Cyclones this morning in the second of three matches for the Bucs at the Mizuno/Auburn Challenge. Iowa State improved to 2-0 in the tournament in Saturday's first match where Katie Kruenegel led ISU with 11 kills while Katie Jessen had eight kills and 14 digs. Sara Scandiffio (Purcellville, Va.) led ETSU with nine kills and 10 digs. The Lady Bucs offense was never able to match the power of the ISU hitters at the net hitting just .049 for the match against the .262 of the Cyclones. In the loss, Brittany Kessel (Libertyville, Ill.) posted 22 assists adding seven digs and four kills during the morning match-up. "We battled today against some tough competition, we just need to continue to work hard and our wins will come for us. It was great to see the newcomers work together with our veterans in our matches this weekend," head coach Lindsey Devine said. For their second match of the day ETSU took on Birmingham Southern losing the match 3-1 (30-23, 30-26, 25-30, 30-23). BSC's Rachel Malmborg registered 20 kills on 41 attacks while Lindsey Herzog had a team-best 14 kills. Jennifer Sartor (Toronto, Canada) led ETSU with 18 kills hitting .467 for the match. Scandiffio added 14 kills and 13 digs while Kessel managed 42 assists in her third match for the Lady Bucs. ETSU posted 12 total team blocks compared to the 14 by the BSC defense for the match. Iowa State managed to pull through the weekend with a 3-0 record taking the Mizuno/Auburn Challenge title. The Lady Bucs will be back in action Tuesday, Sept. 7 when they travel to Raleigh, N. C. to face the N.C. State Wolfpack in a 5:30 p.m. non-conference match-up.
