JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 11, 2009) - The ETSU volleyball team saw its three-game win streak come to an end as the Bucs were swept by Florida Gulf Coast Saturday at Brooks Gym, 3-0 (21-25, 17-25, 20-25).
Junior Lauren Baufield (Plymouth, Minn.) posted double-digit kills for the second straight match with ten against the Eagles. Whitney Cogburn (Kingsport, Tenn.) had a good all-around performance with eight kills, seven assists and four digs.
"In knowing the type of offense Florida Gulf Coast runs we knew it was going to be faster, and unfortunately our players did not make the changes to stop or control that kind of offense," said head coach Lindsey Devine. "That is a valuable lesson for us as we progress in conference. Our team knows that to be successful we need to be that team that doesn't wait until to the middle of the end of the match to make changes. It was good to see Lauren have another good offensive performance for us today."
Amanda Youell (Middleburg, Fla.) tallied 20 assists and two blocks in the match, while Alysa Long (Romulus, Mich.) had six kills and three blocks.
FGCU took four-straight points to start the first set, but the Bucs battled back to cut the Eagle lead to 7-6. The Eagles then went on a 6-3 run to extend their lead to 13-9. Both teams traded points down the stretch until with FGCU up 23-21 the Eagles got a kill and a block from Jacqueline Cowden to take the first set 25-21.
In the second set, FGCU jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead, but saw its lead cut to 10-8. Later in the set, the Eagles used a 5-1 run to increase their advantage to 19-11. FGCU closed out the set 25-17 on a kill by Emma Racila to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
The Eagles carried their momentum into the third set as they jumped out to a 10-4 lead. ETSU cut the lead to four points a couple times, but could not even the set as FGCU went on to take the third set 25-20 on an ETSU attack error.
ETSU (3-6, 2-1 A-Sun) is back in action Tuesday at 7 p.m. as the Bucs host in-state rival Chattanooga at Brooks Gym. For more information on Buccaneer volleyball and all other athletic news, please visit www.ETSUBucs.com.
